chanchan yaki

Finally, breakfast together on a slow sunday morning.
mushroom and cauliflower potage, garlic toasts, baked banana
and a gingerbreadman =)

i just have to have one of these each xmas, and i would keep the man till xmas is over.
sometimes i dont even eat it. cos i enjoy looking at it! i know this sweet collection of mine is bad. buy, enjoy looking, and dont consume. hehee
but ok well, we had the man this morning. it wasnt gingerbread cookie, but brioche.
with chocolate legs which was yummy =)

Lunch was
grated mountain yam, sticky nameko mushrooms and spinach on hot soba
grilled beancurd skins filled with seaweed

and then we had a friend come over with a bag of nice persimmons from his parents home=)
cant wait for it to ripen ^^

Dinner was
chanchan yaki, tofu salad and daikon soup
i know this looks messy, but chanchan yaki is basically grilled fish on a bed of cabbage strips topped with sweet miso, eaten out of a hotplate. i used our big frying pan instead =)
Originally a Hokkaido speciality, and when i first had this, it was during our trip to Wakkanai where hokke ( a medium sized white fish) is plenty and hokke chanchan yaki is common. All along, J n i have been having the dried version of hokke. sunned and salted, then simply grilled to consume. so when we had fresh hokke in Wakkanai, we were impressed at how tasty it is without curing it with salt. Today at the fish mart, we found fresh hokke! from Niigata. very rare! and tried chanchan yaki on our own. hmmm=) good~

recharged for a new week!
