As i have been mentioning, i really am enjoying my summer vegetables, essentially because they are good for grilling and i love grilled foods!
So today i got myself more eggplants for grilling.
And i found this interesting round one...

Checked up online and it seems this is called the Kyoto eggplant.
Probably because it is very commonly eaten there.
Comparitively, sweeter, denser and crunchier than the soft and spongy usual sized eggplants.
So depending on whats on the menu, i guess i can play around with these different textured eggplants.

And today, i made fried jelly!
Directly translated from Japanese which is zeri fry.
Saw this on TV last night on this show that introduces the different interesting food facts of different prefectures and villages which otherwise the other general population of Japan doesnt know of.
Everyone was trying to picture jelly deep fried.
Like ebi fry which is prawns coated in breadcrumbs and deepfried, the image in most peoples heads was jelly breadcrumbed and fried.

But it turned out, what is actually inside is okara, (a kind of yellowish pulp consisting of insoluble parts of the soybean which remain in the filter sack when pureed soybeans are filtered in the production of soy milk) and mashed potatoes!
Then this mixture is breadcrumbed and fried just like croquettes!
And the reason why it was called zeri fry was because of the coin shape.
銭 is read as zeni and means coin. My guess is it was originally called zeni fry and it probably morphed into the pet name zeri fry.

Looks like the regular croquette
But in zeri fry, the meat is replaced by okara.
Main was another experiment
Called jin jao ro, a mimick of the chinese wok fried green peppers and pork, i tried replacing the pork with flat soya sheets which look like pork and in my opinion, are yummier than pork slices.
But i overdid the sauce, and this turned out a bit salty.
J was not very glad the pork was replaced =P
I am gonna try this again and make him change his mind!

Today is Rishu (立秋) day and officially marks the start of autumn.
But it is still so hot..............
